Healthcare Career Advantage Internships
Jamestown, NY – April 2, 2021
The Healthcare Career Advantage Talent Pipeline Development Program is an internship program for Young Professionals (College Students and High School Graduates) that are interested in and pursuing DIRECT PATIENT CARE CAREERS. Chautauqua Works Workforce Investment Board will be accepting applications for this program. Funding through several local foundations is anticipated. The program will be based on funding availability. In addition to working with local school districts to create awareness of healthcare careers at the high school level through a career fair at UPMC Chautauqua, this program will also offer an internship component for college students.
“This is our tenth year being able to offer internships specifically for direct patient care in the healthcare field to increase awareness of and interest in our local job opportunities.” said Katie Geise, Executive Director. “Internship programs are a great opportunity for college students to gain experience, but this specific program is also a great opportunity for healthcare related businesses to start building connections with our future workforce. We have a need to fill healthcare jobs locally, and we need to start building relationships between students and employers now.”
Paige was a 2020 participant in the Healthcare Career Advantage Internship. She did her internship at The Resource Center and had this to say about her internship: “My time with The Resource Center this summer helped to solidify my career decision to pursue nursing. After spending time with LPNs, and RNs, I realized just how much I thoroughly enjoy the profession. I appreciate how variable nursing is, in that every day and every patient is different. I also appreciate the intellectual challenges that each day presents. Nurses are required to continuously think of new ways to treat their patients, and I look forward to embracing this challenge one day. I appreciate that nursing is not a career that everyone can do, as it requires diligence and patience, as exemplified by all staff whom I was fortunate enough to shadow.
I learned a great deal about the IDD community, as I had never previously interacted with these individuals, and I am very thankful for that. I am very grateful to have been selected for this incredible opportunity and recommend this internship to other students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. These past six weeks allowed me to feel more confident in my career decision and gave me a better idea of what to expect when I become a nurse.”
